Targeting proper keywords can mean the difference between driving 100 and 100,000 visitors to your article or blog post. Obviously the ultimate goal is to find keywords with no competition, high search volume and highly targeted to the product.

CAMPAIGN NEGATIVE KEYWORDS <-- If PPC Affiliate

I have already done extensive keyword research for Interview Manuscript (of which my results are directly above), but I would also like to give you a "quick and dirty" way to do some keyword research of you don't already know how to yourself.


1. Use a keyword tool such as Google's Keyword Tool to find "long-tail" keywords.

2. Find a "long-tail" keyword (3+ words) that makes semantic sense and has enough search volume to make it worth your time. Note: Generally, the higher the search volume the more the competition for that specific keyword.

3. Go to Google and search for the keyword in quotes. For example, if the keyword is: tough interview questions you will want to search for it as "tough interview questions".

4. If the number of search results is under 10,000 (ie: Results 1 - 10 of about 10,000 for "tough interview questions") you have a winner. If not, repeat the process and try to find one with less competition.

Please note that this method is quite basic and I'm sure many reading this will have a few other tips and tricks up their sleeve. That said, this is still a very viable way of doing some quick research and taking advantage of keywords will little competition.

The rise of Web 2.0 has given us marketers a whole new means of building links, spreading content, driving traffic and ultimately yielding us more sales.

There are now countless Web 2.0 sites and blogs that will allow you to create your own pages - which gives you the ability to get your voice to more people. You would be foolish nowadays to not have a Web 2.0 and social media presence.

The one note on Web 2.0 sites / blogs are that some are "nofollow" - meaning that they don't pass any (or just a little) link juice to your sites in improving their rankings. As so, some people completely ignore "nofollow" sites, while others still do utilize them. Personally, I use both equally.

While there are a whole host of different ways to make social bookmarking work for you - I'm going to briefly discuss two common uses.

1.
The most common of the bunch - using social bookmarking sites for backlinks. Especially authority sites like Digg, Propeller and Clipmarks (it seems) that receive lots of Google love - creating backlinks to your Web 2.0 properties, articles and own domains with these bookmarks can truly shoot you up the SERPS.

In addition, if your sites are not yet indexed by the major search engines, just a few social bookmarks (especially from the big names) can get you indexed and up the rankings fast.

2.
Using social bookmarking & social media to go viral.

If create a viral Youtube video, controversial piece of writing or something else unique / interesting and get yourself highly rated in the social bookmarking sites, you can expect a huge wave of traffic (the "digg effect" anyone?).

Getting yourself high on the social networks (via bookmarking) will also have your link spread across the web - fulfilling the "viral" component of this technique.

Article marketing allows you to get your content seen. By piggy backing on the authority of the article directories, the search engines reward you with higher rankings - which of course translates into more visitors and more sales.

Do remember that the article directories require that your articles be "purely informative" throughout the article, and may only have promotion at the end (aka the resource box).

If you are unsure as to how to write your articles to receive the best results, you will want to follow an easy 2 step process:

1. Do your keyword research and pick a good one with decent search volume and relatively low competition. (See keyword research).

2. Use the full keyword in the beginning of the title and 3-5 times throughout a 250-300 word article.

The premise of Yahoo Answers (YA) is simple - people ask questions and others answer.

Now the key to squeeze out traffic from YA is posted quality, tailored answers to each individual question and also include a link back to your site.

While most marketers put their link at the end of their answer - it is highly more effective to include at least one link in the middle of your answer.

Another important point to note is that even if the question looks like it was asked by a 5 year old - don't worry about it! Google loves YA and gives it quite a bit of authority in its SERPs and you will therefore drive traffic (indirectly) from Google searches.

Calls to Action -
While you don't want to say "click here!", you do want people to click. Phrases such as "act now" and "learn blah blah blah" make people click. Take the proven blueprints I have provided and add your own personal twist.

Immediacy -
You NEED to stress immediacy, of which a few ways to do so are as follows:

1. Make people believe that this is only a one-time offer and they will not see this ever again.
2. State the price may go up (which it may).
3. Add your own twist and say that the bonus you are offering (considering you are providing one) will no longer be given after midnight.

I'm sure you can think of other ways to expand on those ideas - but may those start you off.

Emotions -

While some may not agree with this section 100%, all marketing is psychologically playing with emotions - and digital products are NO different. If anything, they require even more innovative and creative thinking to get people to pull out their wallets for something that's not tangible.

Examples include:

1. Persuading people to think they will bomb without help (which they very well may).
2. Stressing nervousness in the heat of the moment.
3. Stressing the grilling of questions the candidate may face in front of a panel of interviewers.

Remember: the key isn't to use unethical scare tactics - but sometimes a stronger voice may need to be used.

Often surprisingly to the PPC novice, the actual PPC networks that serve your ads often have a drastic impact as to how well your campaigns actually perform. And this is due to a variety of reasons; including traffic quality, user demographics and overall network quality.

Now this brings up the obvious question of "what network is best?" And that's a tough question to answer - it usually varies on the product, the pitch and a variety of other factors.

For Interview Manuscript, we have some pretty solid data on the "big three." MSN to converts quite well, Google yielded average rates and Yahoo played the caboose with slightly below average CR's. In regards to the lower tier networks, we don't have enough data to make any blanket statements.

CAMPAIGN NEGATIVE KEYWORDS

I have already done extensive keyword research for Interview Manuscript (of which my results are directly above), but I would also like to give you a "quick and dirty" way to do some keyword research of you don't already know how to yourself.

Note: I personally don't use paid keyword research tools at all, and I have not profited enough from PPC to have the need or use for fancy keyword tools. I strictly use Google's Keyword Tool, my noggin' and the SEO tool for Firefox.

Keyword Research Steps

Note: This was originally posted by me at Niche Choppers (a great forum that has great information like this you should check out..)

1. Obviously, start with a keyword that you think users will type in that are ready to purchase your product / sign up for your offer / input their email address. It is perfectly ok if this keyword is only one or two words, as we will be expanding this into the medium / long-tail soon.

2. Go to Google.com and begin to type in your keyword. Look at what Google Suggest displays below the search box. Some of these have relatively low pages (competition), but receive higher than normal traffic because of what Google Suggests. Capitalizing on these lower competition keywords can yield some nice bid prices while still sending steady traffic. You can always go to Google Traffic Estimator if you want to get a better idea.

3. Take your brainstormed keywords (from step 1) and newly found Suggest keywords (from step 2) and throw these in Google's Keyword Tool. Take all the keywords the tool provides and click "Add All >>>". Do not worry if the keywords aren’t perfect for your product at the moment, as those will be sorted soon.

4. Now a few hundred keywords will be in the box on the right side of your screen. Click "text," under "Download these keywords." This will bring up a text file all the keywords you added, and allow easy transplant to excel. Copy all of these into my Root Keyword Extracting excel sheet (which I can't believe I'm giving out!).

5. *I believe you have to have macros on to run the VBA code.* In order to keep your ad relevancy, LP, and QS up, it is smart to keep all alike keywords together. Essentially, that is what this tool does. It currently handles 10,000 keywords at a time.

6. Paste the copied keywords starting at A1. You will see that you have quite a few different "roots" of the keywords you pasted in. For example, if you have keywords related to weight loss. You may have roots of diet, burn fat, lose weight, weight loss, fat loss, etc.. The key is to filter these out (which by hand, takes ages.)

7. Click the "Sort By Root Keyword" button and enter in the root you wish to find. For example, "lose fat" would pull everything from "lose fat now" to "how do I quickly lose fat." Any term with "lose fat" will be pulled and placed in column I.

8. Before you click the button again for your next term, drag those keywords aside or into another sheet. Simply repeat the process of finding the root keywords.

9. Take the lists you just used created, copy and paste the entire targeted list into the Google Keyword Tool again. Remove old search terms you have on the right side and add the new ones the keyword tool found. *Hint: You can copy that entire keyword list and run it through the keyword tool about 5 times and grab some great longtails. This works with any keyword list I have used yet.*

10. Take that now long list of longtails and head back into my Root Keyword Extractor tool. Once again, grab the ones of your original root phrase. For my example, fat loss. You should now have a fairly long keyword list (near or over 100) for that specific keyword.

11. You can rinse and repeat this process on all the "root" phrases you and keyword tool developed are complete. Hopefully you have quite a few highly targeted ad groups after this and you can super target your ads and landing pages accordingly.

12. If you would like to be an overachiever, you can of course use this tool to super-target small groups of keywords if you so please.

The keyword organizer I refer to is my own 100% home grown excel keyword organization tool completely coded in VBA.

I mentioned it in step 4 above, and gave instructions for it in the subsequent steps which I will also repeat below:

1. Download My Root Keyword Organizing Excel Sheet Here

2. Paste the keywords you want to organize, starting at A1. You will see that you probably have quite a few different "roots" of the keywords you pasted in. Want to be successful in PPC? You must track EVERYTHING.

This includes things as small as different headlines, different sales pitch tones of voice and of course includes keywords, different styles of landing pages, ads, keywords, PPC networks and more.

Now you can complete your tracking in several different ways...

1. Using simple Clickbank tracking IDs at the end of your links. (This works for very low volume or if you just want to track very general changes).

2. PPC network (Google, Yahoo, MSN) provided conversion tracking.

3. A third party tracking software such as Tracking 202 (which is 100% free for the regular version).

In case you don't know, Ezines (pronounced "ee-zeen") are online magazines. They can be on just about any topic - including career advancement & interviewing!

They can be a great source of quality traffic and often convert quite well.

Unlike PPC, in most media buying and CPM content network buys you pay per 1000 impressions - whether you get 0 clicks or 1000 clicks, you pay the same price no mater what.

In other words, even if your ad doesn't perform well and gets an extremely low CTR - you're still stuck with the entire bill! As so, you need to be sure to have a proven to perform ad based on your PPC data before you go about buying on a CPM basis.

In addition, CPM buys are almost always based on image (in contrast to text) ads/banners. It is also important to note that you should work to style your ad based on the exact site you are buying adspace on, and not using a general ad. As so, the banners provided (while you are welcome to use them) will probably not product the most desirable results on a CPM basis.

Press releases allow you a quick and easy way to get your content seen. Now it is important to note that press releases come in two distinct types: free & paid.

Free press releases will get your content on the PR site of submission and possibly a few smaller news aggregators.

In contract, paid press releases will often get your content featured on Google News and several larger news aggregators that could drive more than a few visitors to your site.

As so, it is your decision to either cough up about $40 to have your content featured on sites like Google News - or simply go the free route and see less results.
